Where this unit stands
According to press coverage of the presentation on 7 June 2026, Leman Russ tanks were among the Astra Militarum vehicles shown, alongside Rogal Dorn and Baneblade tanks — not confirmed by the publisher in any material we were able to open. On the tabletop the Leman Russ is the Imperial Guard’s main battle tank, produced across the galaxy in a dozen variants built on the same hull. No statistic has been published for any unit in this game.
What the tabletop establishes
The Leman Russ has been in the setting since the beginning and it is deliberately unremarkable: slow, heavily armoured at the front, armed with whatever the variant calls for, and available in numbers no other faction’s armour matches. Its design point is that the Imperium can build thousands of them and does. The same hull produces battle cannon variants, flamer variants, tank hunters and command tanks, which matters here for a practical reason: a game that ships one of them has a ready-made path to the rest.

Only its presence has been reported. What no source states: whether tanks are recruited like any other unit, whether they arrive alone or in troops, what they cost, and what stops them. Nothing has been published about variants either, although the tabletop range makes them an obvious source of later content.
What to watch next
The open question is what a tank is, in Total War terms. The series has fielded chariots, artillery and monsters, and a main battle tank is none of those: it is a fast, heavily armoured platform that fires while moving and cannot be meaningfully charged by infantry. The Warhammer trilogy’s closest equivalents were single-entity monsters, which infantry could at least surround. If tanks arrive in numbers, the Astra Militarum becomes an army whose line is armour rather than men, and the faction’s stated identity as massed infantry gets complicated.
