Where this setting stands

Warhammer Community’s announcement of 12 December 2025 states that Total War: Warhammer 40,000 brings the franchise into the Era Indomitus. The publisher’s own game page repeats it: the game is set in an era where the galaxy is the theatre of an endless war. This is the current period of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, and it is the only element of the game’s fiction the publisher has committed to by name.

02

What the tabletop establishes

The Era Indomitus began when a warp storm tore the galaxy in half and a returned primarch launched a counter-offensive across it. Games Workshop has published new material for this period since 2017, which matters for a practical reason: it is the era whose armies, characters and worlds are currently in print. A game set here can draw on material that is being actively written, rather than on a frozen snapshot — and the four launch factions are all forces that exist, in force, in this period.

The current period of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, opened by the tearing of the galaxy in two and by the return of a primarch to lead the Imperium’s counter-offensive. It is the era Games Workshop has published new material for since 2017.

Tabletop identity, as established by Games Workshop. It says nothing about the video game.
03

What has actually been shown

The publisher has named the era and nothing more. It has not said which events of the era the campaign covers, when in it the campaign begins, or whether the campaign advances through it at all. The announcement describes waging war on a galactic scale, conquering planets, upgrading a fleet and managing resources, before unleashing forces in battle. It does not connect any of that to a specific event, war or date in the setting’s own timeline.

04

What to watch next

The open question is how much of the era the game intends to be about. Naming the Era Indomitus fixes which armies are available and which are anachronistic, and that is genuinely useful information. It says nothing about whether the campaign has a story, a fixed starting position, or an end state — and in a Total War title those are the decisions that determine whether the setting is scenery or subject. Creative Assembly has published a period, not a premise. Information correct as of 17 August 2026.

What is not known

These questions have no published answer as of 12 December 2025. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.

?The publisher states the game is set in the Era Indomitus. It has not said which events of that era the campaign covers, or when in it the campaign begins.
?Whether the campaign map is one sector, one segmentum or the galaxy has not been described beyond “a galactic scale”.
