Where this unit stands
Intercessors are the first Space Marine unit anyone outside the studio has played. PC Gamer, given an hour on a preview build at Gamescom and writing on 29 August 2026, describes a tutorial force of them holding a position behind cover against an Ork charge: firing bolt rifles, throwing grenades and launching others from grenade launchers, then holding the line in melee when the Orks arrived. The same account names two more of their weapons — automatic weapons for close range, and the long-ranged stalker bolt rifle. None of this comes from the publisher, which has never named a single unit of any faction.
What the tabletop establishes
On the tabletop, Intercessors are the Primaris battleline squad: five or ten armoured warriors with a bolt rifle each, the unit an army is built around rather than the one it is won with. They exist because Games Workshop rebuilt the Space Marine range around taller models in 2017, and the Intercessor is the ordinary soldier of that new range. Being ordinary is the point — in an army where every model is expensive, the cheap unit is the one you have several of, and everything else is bought around it.

PC Gamer, given an hour on a preview build at Gamescom on 29 August 2026, describes a tutorial force of Intercessors — called in the piece just some basic dudes — holding a position behind cover against an Ork charge, firing bolt rifles, throwing and launching grenades, and then winning the melee when the Orks arrived. Tabletop identity, as established by Games Workshop. It says nothing about the video game. What has actually been shown
What the account describes is a small force behaving like a large one. The writer calls them just some basic dudes and then reports that a tiny army of them felt as powerful and versatile as a standard, full-featured Total War army — which is the design problem the Space Marines pose, answered in one sentence of impression. The mechanism given for it is wargear: the unit is not doing one thing well, it is doing several adequately, because it carries several kinds of weapon at once. No number is attached to any of that, and no roster entry has been published.
What to watch next
The open question is what an Intercessor squad costs, because everything about the faction hangs on it. Total War prices a unit against what it kills and what it survives, and balances armies by letting the cheap side field more. If Intercessors are cheap enough to field in numbers, the Space Marines stop being the few and become an ordinary Total War army in ceramite. If they are expensive enough to be rare, then the account above describes a unit that has to be worth several Guardsmen at once, and the game has to make small armies feel like armies rather than skirmishes — which is what the writer says it did. Nothing published resolves it, and a preview impression is not a price list. Information correct as of 4 September 2026.
What is not known
These questions have no published answer as of 29 August 2026. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.
