Where this faction stands

The Astra Militarum are one of four playable factions confirmed for launch, announced by Games Workshop on 12 December 2025 alongside the Space Marines, the Orks and the Aeldari. The publisher’s own game page describes them as the largest human fighting force in the setting, a fortress of flesh and steel whose legions advance under the roar of battle tanks and the thunder of artillery. Press coverage of the 7 June 2026 presentation reports that the Astra Militarum were the faction shown in gameplay, defending Armageddon. As of 17 August 2026 no statistic has been published for any unit in this game.

What the tabletop establishes

The Imperial Guard, renamed the Astra Militarum, has been the setting’s ordinary-humans army since the very first edition of the tabletop game. Its identity is arithmetic: individually the weakest infantry in the game, fielded in numbers nothing else matches, and supported by more artillery and more tanks than any other force. That identity is the reason this faction matters to a Total War audience more than any of the other three. Total War has spent twenty-five years building battles around exactly this — large formations of ordinary soldiers, held in line by discipline and broken by morale. Of the four launch factions, the Astra Militarum is the one that already speaks the series’ language.

The Imperium’s standing army, and the largest fighting force in the setting: ordinary humans in overwhelming numbers, supported by massed artillery and tank divisions. On the tabletop they trade individual quality for volume of fire and bodies.

Tabletop identity, as established by Games Workshop. It says nothing about the video game.

What has actually been shown

What has actually been shown is narrow, and worth stating plainly. Warhammer Community confirmed the faction on 12 December 2025. The official game page publishes a description of its character but no unit, no statistic and no mechanic. Press accounts of the 7 June 2026 PC Gaming Show name the units seen in the gameplay section: Cadian Shock Troops, Kasrkin, Ogryns led by Commissars, Leman Russ and Rogal Dorn tanks, Sentinel walkers and a Baneblade, with concept art of a Primaris Psyker shown as a support unit. None of that has been confirmed by the publisher in any material we were able to open, and no numbers accompanied any of it.

What to watch next

The question worth following is not how strong the Astra Militarum will be, but what the game does with the one thing that makes them different: they are the faction whose soldiers are supposed to be expendable. Total War already models morale, formation and attrition, so on paper the fit is easy. The hard part is that a Warhammer 40,000 army is also expected to field a super-heavy tank that outranges everything on the field, and Total War has never fielded one in a line unit slot. An army that is simultaneously the cheapest infantry and the heaviest armour is a costing problem, and Creative Assembly has said nothing about how it is solved. What is not known

These questions have no published answer as of 8 June 2026. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.

?No statistics of any kind have been published for any Astra Militarum unit.
?Whether the faction’s identity in campaign is attrition, production, or something else has not been described by the publisher.
?How massed artillery works alongside Total War’s existing siege and ranged systems is unannounced.
