Where this faction stands
The Space Marines are one of four playable factions confirmed for launch, alongside the Astra Militarum, the Orks and the Aeldari. Games Workshop announced the roster on 12 December 2025, and the publisher’s own game page still lists the same four in August 2026. Creative Assembly describes them as genetically engineered weapons of war: few in number, clad in sacred armour, wielding the Imperium’s most fearsome arsenal. Everything beyond that description — unit roster, mechanics, campaign role — is unannounced as of 16 August 2026.
What the tabletop establishes
The Space Marines have anchored the Warhammer 40,000 setting since 1987 and are, on the tabletop, the archetypal elite army: small model counts, high resilience, high cost per model. That identity is what makes their arrival in a Total War game genuinely unusual. Total War has spent twenty-five years building battles around large formations of interchangeable soldiers, and the Warhammer trilogy already stretched that formula with monsters and single entities. An army whose defining trait is that there are very few of them pushes it further than anything the series has fielded before.

What the publisher has actually shown is narrow, and worth stating plainly. Warhammer Community confirmed the four launch factions and the Era Indomitus setting on 12 December 2025. The official game page describes each faction’s flavour but publishes no unit, no statistic and no mechanic. Press coverage of the 7 June 2026 PC Gaming Show listed named units for the Astra Militarum and the Orks — and, notably, none for the Space Marines. As of 16 August 2026 not one Space Marine unit has been named by any source we could trace. That sentence needs a footnote as of 3 September 2026, and the footnote is more interesting than the correction. Press coverage of Gamescom on 27 August 2026 names the Dreadnought — but it names it as the destination of a dying character, not as something you recruit. Whether that makes it a named unit depends on what it turns out to be: a recruitable unit, a state a character enters, or both. Nobody has published the answer, so the honest position is that one Space Marine word has appeared, and it is not yet clear what kind of thing it names.
What to watch next
If you came here looking for a Space Marine unit list, there is not one, and anyone showing you one is guessing. Here is what is actually known, and the open question worth following. Known: they are playable at launch, in the Era Indomitus. Unknown: which Chapter, which units, and how an elite army works in a game built on mass. That last point is the real question. In Total War, unit size is the currency of battle; an army of very few, very strong models has to be paid for somewhere else — smaller stacks, higher upkeep, or squads that behave unlike any Total War unit so far. Creative Assembly has said nothing about it. Information correct as of 16 August 2026.
